6.12.09 – Tuntematon Sotilas by Edvin Laine

It is the independence day. On the YLE2 channel there is every year a movie concerning the war. The war of protecting our independence. The movie is a real classic that tells about Finnish men in the war. The movie was good.

The is based on a very famous Finnish book, also named Tuntematon Sotilas, which means “unknown soldier”. Author of the book is Väinö Linna, one of the best known Finnish authors. He has written some of the nicest books in Finland’s history.

The mood of the movie is partly upset, partly happy, but you know, war is always really sad thing and the movie reflects the mood. This movie was so original too.

I recommend this movie to every Finn, it is a must see. I’m sure everyone like it at least a little, at least the patriotism and being proud of being from Finland. Reading the book before watching the film, but everything works.

5.12.2009 – Birds by Alfred Hitchcock

Birds by Alfred Hitchcock was a very good movie. As the movie started, in the very first scene, Alfred Hitchcock could be seen as the man with two white dogs.

The idea of the movie was that all birds in a little village went crazy and started attacking people. Some parts were actually quite horrifying.

I personally liked the movie a lot. I would recommend this to anyone over 12, mainly because screaming birds and blood everywhere might be too much for someone under 12. It’s fynny how some say this is a horror movie, this is totally an actionous drama with some tension in it.

This is just as good as all other Hitchcock’s films, which means really really good.

31.11.2009 – La Strada by Federico Fellini

This Italian neorealistic drama, directed by an Italian, Federico Fellini, was a very, very different kind of movie. It was shockingly weird, I just couldn’t like it in any way possible. What really disturbed me was that girl, Gelsomina, who was really childish and ignorant young lady. I was absolutely disgusted, but I watched the film.

So in the movie, this girl named Gelsamina, was taken by a mean man (a nice man in my opinion, because that girl deserved it), that put her in a circus(where she belongs to). That man treated her badly, and eventually the girl escaped at least once.

I don’t recommend this movie to anyone, I mean, you can watch this, but it is jsut so weird. Only reason to watch it would be the fact that it’s a classic. Otherwise the movie is just carbage, in my opinion of course.

29.11.09 – Singin’ in the Rain by Gene Kelly

So I bought this movie the other day, directed and acted by Gene Kelly. It should be one of the best-known movies of 20th century. The fact that the movie is directed, and the main role is acted, by the same person, isn’t the only reason. This movie contains some of the best songs and dances I have ever seen in a movie. The actors that dance are just so skilled, they could make their living out of it. In short words: amusing and breath-taking movements and skill.

So Gene Kelly plays the main character, a movie actor that needs to make a musical on top of his movie’s soundtrack because the lady acting in the movie has such a horrible voice. Debbie Reynolds plays the good girl’s role, not the one with ugly voice, actually she is the one with very nice voice. The main character, Don, and the nice girl, sort of like each other and that makes the woman with bad voice, who also likes Don, jealous. The fact that the nice girl is also better actress/singer, doesn’t make their relationship any better.

I recommend this movie to pretty much anyone over 7 years old, maybe for girls especially. Any boy can enjoy this movie too, but if there’s anything better to do, I bet they would’t watch it. The beginning especially is very slow and even boring.

This definately is a movie worth watching, probably not in the top-10, but close enough to be considered as a real classic. Just watch it guys, you won’t regret it once you’ve done it.

26.10.2009 – Dr. Strangelove by Stanley Kubrick

This American comedy movie was made in 1964. It was directed by Stanley Kubrick. In the movie, an army general believes in conspiracy theory of communists trying to fluorify American drinking water. He does not want to let it happen so he orders a nuclear-armed B-52s to nuke every important location of Soviet Union. General won’t let go of a secret code that would call the planes back. So at the end, one plane drops the bomb in Soviet Union.

Movie was really original, funny but so serious at the same time. It’s so terrile what was about to happen in the movie, that there’s no way anyone can think it’s true, so that makes it quite funny.

I would recommend this movie to anyone older than 7. I mean, someone under 7 is not old enough to understand for example what an atomic bomb is. No matter what type of person you are, you’re probably gonna laugh at some point. Watch this movie.

12.10 – Touch of Evil by Orson Welles 1958

Touch of Evil is an American crime drama film, written, directed by, and co-starring Orson Welles. The movie was made in 1958. Welles’ role was the oversized, corrupted detective. Welles actually shot the scenes by himself, but they were sloppy and unproffessional so he took them to Universal Studios where professionals edited the scenes. Mr. Welles claimes Universal Studios also took extra filmshots without his knowledge. However Univesal claims they asked for permission to do so but Welles didn’t care.

Opening seen of the film is seen as one of the greatest long shots of the history. In the scene there is a man placing a bomb in a car. He crosses the U.S/Mexico border to the United States’ side and explodes the car.

I recommend this movie to children above 12. There is not much violence but drug abusing and confusing conversations make it too heavy for a little child’s mind.

Duck Soup

Duck Soup was directed by Leo McCarey, an American film director.The film was a comedy movie. It was really funny, even though it is about 70 years old. In my opinion, the director’s purpose was to make a hilarius movie, which was a pretty tough thing to do back then. He succeeded very well, considering how poor supplies they had. That meant they had to have a good plot and good actors, since there were no special effects that could take over.

Duck soup was done in 1933 in USA. The specific location where the movie took place is unknown.

There is a famous mirror scene where a guy called Pinky, dressed as Firefly, pretends to be Firefly’s reflection in a missing mirror, matching his every move — including ones that begin out of sight — to near perfection until the end of the scene. Eventually, and to their misfortune, Chicolini, also disguised as Firefly, collides with both of them.

I prefer this movie to all age groups, to everyone that wants comedy. This is certainly one of the best movies ever made, and definately one of the best comedies.

14.9.2009 – A Fistful of Dollars by Sergio Leone

A Fistuf of Dollars… what a great movie that was. Clint Eastwood acting as the main character, this is one of the best wild west movies ever made. This movie genre is known as a Spaghetti Western. It means these movies were directed by an Italian and produced with an Italian, with a Spanish partner usually.

A Man with No Name arrives to a little town in North Mexico. He wants to make money there. He sees there are two mafia families living there and arguing. He works for both of the families and turns them against each other in order to make money. He isn’t only a smart person, he is also an amazing shooter. He can hit a single rope with a bullet from 50 meters away.

Even though this movie is a shooter type, it is not very bloody, and can be watched by boys and girls from anyone from 12 and up. Only reason for that is the complicated plot and some shooting that happens.

The film surprised me once again, like some other old movies that I’ve seen. I honestly didn’t know old movies could be so good. The quality of audio and picture are not so great, but overall the plot and the actors were very decent. I really liked the way Clint Eastwood played his role: quiet, self-determined and brave.

If I was to give out stars for this movie, it would totally deserve at least 4 stars, if not 5.

7.9.2009 – Les Quatre Cents Coups by Francois Truffaut

Antoine Doinel

This movie was about a young school boy from France. First thing you notice it that he gets in a lot of trouble at school. His teacher punished him alot. It’s an old black ‘n white movie with good quality audio.

The author’s purpose probably was just to describe a young boy’s life when everything goes wrong. He gets expelled from school, he sees her mother date another guy and he moves to the streets. This is an old time family drama. It’s kind of sad movie, and the lack of color makes it even more sad. The mood is somewhat depressed and also a little exciting in some parts.

The film was done in 1959, in France and directed by Francois Truffaut. The Main character is Antoine. Overall the movie was good, the outline is pretty much as good as today’s movies’ but of course the thing that makes it less attractive is the fact of it being colorless.

The movie’s message to the viewers in my opinion is that when a kid is being treated bad at school and at home, it might cause him/her to escape. It might even warn some parents that they shouldn’t go so hard on their kids. The movie is probably intented to anyone older than 10 years old.

31.8.2009 Movie – Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot by Jacques Tati

This French movie tells about Mr. Hulot’s vacation to a sunny beach. The director of the movie, Jacques Tati is a very famous director from France and is known for old comedy movies. This masterpiece was made in 1953. The movie is a good quality and has got colors in it.

The movie is basically from Mr. Hulot’s point of view, and it describes his miserable holiday with rather emotions and movements than conversations. If i was to compare this to some todays movie, it would be Mr. Bean for sure. Mr. Hulot and Mr. Bean are so much alike, they dont talk much, they describe their feelings with body language and different kinds of faces. I didn’t know a movie from the Fifty’s could be so funny. Unfortunately, the ultimate randomness of some parts of the movie was actually quite disturbing. Luckily, it didn’t totally kill the movie. I enjoyed most of the parts of the movie and some parts even made sense.

Main character of the movie was Mr. Hulot. He was a middle class French man with a terrible car. He went to a vacation with it. He slept in a hotel that had a cafeteria in it. The cafeteria door made a very disturbing voice each time it closed. Overall the movie was pretty good and funny. It made me laugh a couple of times even. The actors were decent at their job and didn’t do any remarkable mistakes. This movie was probably intented to all ages all the way from seven year olds to 90 year olds.
